Doll Birth, 1972, 1994. Photolithograph on paper, A.P., edition of 50, 31 1/2 x 23 1/2 inches. Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Purchased with funds contributed by the Photography Committee and the International Director’s Council and Executive Committee Members. 2004.76.5. © Tracey Moffatt.
Currently showing through April 16th at the Guggenheim Museum is Family Pictures, a collection of works made by 16 artists: Rineke Dijkstra; Catherine Opie; Thomas Struth; Sally Mann; Robert Mapplethrope; Hellen Van Meene; Nan Goldin; Gregory Crewdson; Janine Antoini; Gillian Wearing; Patty Chang; Collier Schorr; Nathalie Djurberg; Tracey Moffatt; Anna Gaskell; Loretta Lux. While the exhibition does function as an examination of ‘family dynamics and the emotional tone of child’, as intended by its curator Jennifier Blessing, it obviously is also a hard look at gender politics and an intimate picturing of sexuality in the lives of children.
