Bert Teunissen - Domestic Landscapes

Written on March 15, 2007

Like Candida Hofer, Bert Teunissen has been photographing very specific subjects pertaining to environments throughout his career. Unlike Candida’s work his subject matter is not nearly as grandiose.

He has been documenting Dutch homes and their inhabitants for the last decade or so, taking photos using natural light in their environs. He really captures the feeling of growing old with someone, and what it’s like to spend their lives in the house they probably moved into after they got married.

I had the pleasure of catching his show at the Photographer’s Gallery in London and since a friend told me he was exhibiting at the Aperture Gallery, opening today, I thought this was a great chance to post some of the pictures I took of my jaunt through there. Make sure to check it out.

Also in that gallery are images from the Bound for Glory show they had featuring images from prominent photographers who worked for the Farm Security Administration in the late 30’s, including Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange, who helped portray the effects of the Depression to the American public.
