Helmut by June

April 30, 2007

Brought to us in the U.S. by producer/photographer/director Brett Ratner, Helmut By June is a documentary premiering 7pm tonight (April 30th) on Cinemax.
June was of course Helmut’s wife, muse and model, and a photographer of ability herself (often going by the name Alice Springs).

Robert Mapplethorpe

April 24, 2007

(Portrait of Sam Wagstaff & Robert Mapplethorpe by Francesco Scavullo)
People will have their opinions on Robert Mapplethorpe, one of the great photographers to emerge from the turbulent 70’s to put his own stamp on the photography-as-art movement, brought along by his friend, patron and lover Sam Wagstaff.  Now there is a documentary, Black White + […]

Wanting a bit more…

April 22, 2007

Great piece over at Design Observer by graphic designer Jesse Nivens about how a stock photography’s library is a reflection of our social and cultural perceptions.
I say, let’s assign more photography!

Nick Knight

April 16, 2007

(Nick Knight album cover for Suede, with Peter Saville, Art Director)
Nick Knight has been one of my favourite photographers for a long time, and for very many reasons.  His ability to continually push the envelope and embrace new technologies as a photographer perhaps has no peer.
He was one of the first photographers to wholly take […]

Photographer meets Art Director meets Ad Agency

April 11, 2007

I’ve long been a fan of Andrew Zuckerman’s work and one of his most iconic campaigns has been his consistently excellent work for Puma.  So I was interested to read an article by Adweek about Puma’s new campaign for the spring launch of a line of clothes and shoes dubbed French 77.
I hadn’t heard of […]

The business of stock

It’s hard to imagine in our business that a company with 250 million dollars in revenue last year could be in any kind of trouble, but indeed, Corbis did not turn a profit. But as this article shows, the world of stock photography is still far more tumultuous than that of assignment. From […]

Senior Moment - Tod Papageorge

(Tod Papageorge’s Central Park, 1978, from the exhibition and book Passing Through Eden.)
Great article from New York Magazine on Tod Papageorge…the photographer turned professor who has taken Yale’s vaunted MFA photography program to new heights since taking over from Walker Evans back in 1975.  It’s amazing to see the branches of great photographers that this […]

Anuchai Secharunputong - Still-life Photographer

April 8, 2007

An interesting article from the other side of the world. I’ve been familiar with his work for awhile but was never overly familiar with the commercial photography market in Asia. Anuchai Secharunputong is one of the leading advertising photographers in the world, with numerous accolades to his name. He is one of […]

World’s Oldest Camera

The world’s oldest camera (an 1839 Daguerreotype) has been found in an attic and will be auctioned off.  Pretty cool.

Industry mergers

April 3, 2007

Perhaps they were looking ahead into the future with the dating of their post but over at Psychopedia it’s rumoured that in the wake of the IMG/Art + Commerce acquisition that their next target would be Art Partner, which represents such fashion photography luminaries as Mario Testino, Mert & Marcus and David Sims.
That would indeed […]

From Fashion Week Daily, Gilles Bensimon and his longtime agency JGK have parted ways.  Gilles has been shooting for French Elle and American Elle for decades.
