People will have their opinions on Robert Mapplethorpe, one of the great photographers to emerge from the turbulent 70’s to put his own stamp on the photography-as-art movement, brought along by his friend, patron and lover Sam Wagstaff. Now there is a documentary, Black White + Gray, that will shed a bit more light on this most interesting of shooters, and even more on Wagstaff, a complicated character himself.
