Doc Martens not so heavenly

May 30, 2007

Coming late to this, but Creative Review does a nice summary of the brouhaha over the use of sainted rock icons for a series of Doc Martens ads by their (former) ad agency Saatchi & Saatchi UK.
I actually don’t think the overall concept for these ads are so bad, after all, Doc Martens is a […]

Home is where the heart is.

May 29, 2007

I’m sorry, it’s late so my headline writing skills (such as they are) are even worse right now.

Self-portrait with Elinor Carucci’s husband Eran Bendheim, entitled And If I Don’t Get Enough Attention (2002)
There is a great piece in the Guardian about Elinor Carucci, and how she breaches her private, family life to further explore and […]

Almanac Magazine

The friendly publishers of Almanac Magazine dropped me a line and i’m glad they did, as this online dedicated monthly devoted to photography has quite a few gems.
According to Chris Callahan, one of the founders along with Benedict Fernandez:
“We are a new monthly online photographic magazine.

We publish five photography pieces a month as well as […]

PDN Annual Event

May 21, 2007

The event for the PDN Annual event was held at Capitale last week and I really didn’t expect such a grand display.  I had never been to the space myself and was fairly impressed.

Some atmosphere from the event…a large display rotated images from the winners.

The ornate, cavernous main room’s ceiling.

Various awards and grants being given […]

You’ll never know what you’ll find in the attic…

Wonderful story in the New York Times today about the discovery of Edward Steichen glass plate negatives in the attic of Charlotte Albright, daughter of Charlotte Spaulding.

Andreas Gursky has lost it.

That is the presumption made by New York Magazine in light of a new exhibition of his work at the Matthew Marks Gallery.

Gursky’s May Day V (2006), at Matthew Marks.

To me, Andreas Gursky has always been able to take an image that would be fairly mundane under any other […]

PDN Annual Award Winners

May 15, 2007

(Vincent Laforet for New York Magazine)
The winners of this year’s PDN Awards have been announced!  Check out the winners here, ranging from personal work to glossy ad campaigns.
I’ll be attending the awards event Thursday as luck would have it, so look out for some pictures soon.

Changing Times

Search & Destroy has a great post on how Details magazine covers reached a nadir in the late Eighties and have since fallen into the “put-a-celebrity-on-the-cover” trap to try and move copies.
It reminded me of a great article I read ages back by Michael Bierut over at DesignObserver (and somehow managed to find here) about […]

Terry Richardson for Nike

From WKStudio, the blog for Wieden + Kennedy Portland’s studio, comes a nice post on a campaign shot for Nike by Terry Richardson.  I love it when fashion photographers get hired for their aesthetic to shoot something more mainstream (if Maria Sharapova can be considered mainstream).  Don’t miss the Youtube video they link to about […]

Portfolio’s Lisa Berman

May 4, 2007

(Portfolio debut cover, by Scott Peterman)
PDN magazine has a great section called “Questions for Creatives”, where they ask a decision maker on the client side (photo editor, art buyer, creative director, etc.) various questions regarding their general creative process. As this is a paid section of the PDN site (and of course in […]
