Changing Times

Written on May 15, 2007

Search & Destroy has a great post on how Details magazine covers reached a nadir in the late Eighties and have since fallen into the “put-a-celebrity-on-the-cover” trap to try and move copies.

It reminded me of a great article I read ages back by Michael Bierut over at DesignObserver (and somehow managed to find here) about the same fate that had befallen Esquire.

Obviously these magazines reflect changing times and consumer tastes but I believe there are ways to do this without compromise.

For example, Men’s Vogue (American market)

Vogue Hommes International (first issue under Fabien Baron)

couverture

While both cover subjects are highly debatable, (no offense Roger Federer) Vogue Hommes far outclasses its American counterpart in art direction, yet still remains appealing to a large market.

Lastly, Vogue UK has a great feature of covers from years past.
