Fire the Art Director!
Written on June 8, 2007
I’m going to start posting on some more regular topics, so hopefully you’ll enjoy them.
The first of these will be called “Fire the Art Director!”. As you might guess from the title, I am going to post an ad campaign image each week that I don’t particularly think very highly of.
This week’s: Alexander McQueen for Samsonite Black Label
I. Don’t. Get. It.
Famous designer, innovative luggage design. I am not sure where to start with this but, well, it’s just a lot of wrong.
Is the luggage waterproof, hence him walking out of the ocean? McQueen is known for using great photographers for his campaigns…this is not a great photograph. He looks slightly befuddled as to what is going on, as if he isn’t sure what he’s doing appearing in an ad for his own line of luggage.

i saw this recently and thought it was horrible…the model looks like he’s thinking “take the pic so I can get out of this fucking cold water already!”
The model is actually alexander mcqueen. that makes it even worse.
Hah… that’s exactly what I said to myself as well. Lot’s of bad ads but this on really takes the cake!
They’re going for the Danielle Steele market…
I think that Alexander has gone into the water to take a pee, while the crew & models etc are having lunch. And the arse director, for a joke, has snapped him out there and then comped the luggage in.
Hah! What a fantastic sense of humour this advertising guy has… somebody give him a pay raise!
McQueen actually doesn’t give a shit, since it’s his name that sells the stuff anyway, and not the quality of the product of the image that promotes it.
PLUS the photographer only gets his day rate and not usages on top, BECAUSE ITS NOT HIS PICTURE ha ha oh gosh everyone’s a winner!
Yeah, that’s a sound theory, I’ve entered into this discussion somewhat late, but seemed worth commenting on in any case.
