What Remains - Sally Mann
Written on July 3, 2007
If you have Cinemax on Demand, you can watch the fascinating documentary about fine art photographer Sally Mann, What Remains. I caught it the other night and it reminded me of the recent article about Elinor Carucci from the Guardian.
Here is an artist who has produced a lifetime’s worth of work using her family and her farm in Lexington, Virginia, as subjects. She ran into her share of controversy, particularly nudes of her young children, but never wavered in her work.
Particularly wrenching was the moment where she talks of her husband being diagnosed with a rare form of muscular dystrophy, and asking herself whether it was fair of her to even ask him to be her subject anymore.
It ends July 5th but if anyone knows if it’s available on DVD that would be great.
