“Anonymous”

Written on October 3, 2007

There’s another one of us out there, the anonymous and apparently “Bitter Photographer“. Welcome to the club!

Now all we need is an Unknown Art Buyer to join the blogging fray.

Andrew Hetherington’s blog What’s the Jackanory did a post on us anonymous photo industry bloggers and while I can’t speak for A Photo Editor I have chosen to remain anonymous thus far because of my job, which I happen to like very much. Maintaining a blog such as this will invariably provide various conflicts of interest with my agency and job and it’s just easier to remain faceless.

I didn’t start my blog to vent or disparage anyone out there. I respect a great number of agencies and photographers and in this small world you never know who will end up working with each other. If I can share the things I know and hear for the benefit of those interested without hurting anyone (except Rachel Zoe, who cares about her. Apparently not even her agency, and definitely not Anna Wintour) then I think that’s a good thing.

As it is this blog has brought me a number of contacts and even more surprisingly a readership which I never would have imagined so thanks again for reading everyone.

I just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed your blog and how I wish I had discovered it sooner.

I too started my blog not to vent or disparage but to share and to learn
and have really enjoyed reading up on all your posts

Like you I have been surprised by the amount of readers I have been getting and it has also brought me into contact with a whole new bunch of cool people

Its all good anonymous or not

    Keep on keeping on

    Cheers

    Andrew

The anonymity of the blogger isn’t a problem for me in itself, but if this anonymity translates into unchecked and unfiltered posts by the blogger then it backfires I think b/c encourages the readers/responders to be anonymous too, and then conversations deteriorate into the realms of reactionary, thoughtless, and power tripping. Most sites w/ discussions attract this phenomenon on some level anyway - it’s like the road rage of the net - but I do believe it is possible to avoid much of it through setting a tone and example. I think you do a fine job of it here, but over at the bitterphotographer the problem to me is already apparent.

Sure there are rare times when I’ll make an anonymous comment b/c, as you pointed out, it’s a small business. But I won’t make anonymous comments just b/c I want to speak w/o repercussions all the time.
