A nice website

Written on November 6, 2007

Perhaps my opinion is slightly biased here but here is my friend Margo Silver’s website and I think it’s pretty damn nice.

Good layout, easy to navigate, well designed, good typography and it helps that the work is pretty yummy.

Also, she just recently got picked up for representation by Judi Shin, so congratulations!

I totally agree! That site is a little sick. I tend to see HUNDREDS of web portfolios and it’s a daunting how many people tend to follow the pack. For another great example check out www.artistsandcreatives,com

I like Margo’s work but her site really is not that terrific and doesn’t put her best images front and center. The flash is slow to load as well. If you are going to use flash, create a 1 second auto loop on the homepage with about 25 amazing images–sprinkle in some subliminal creative words–and then let someone drill down if they like what they see. One problem I see over and over are photographer sites with “categories” that become catchalls. She has “personal projects” but there is no delineation or explanation of what the project is about. Still, her best images are found in this gallery IMO. Ditto with “celebrity/music” and “portraits.” Just get rid of the all encompassing portrait category. At least she doesn’t use the stocky “lifestyle” category that most seem to love. I could go on but ppl are probably way past this post.

Awww - com’on, it’s a really good site. Photo categories are tough; they never satisfy everyone. At some point you have to just go with what you got and let people dig in. I found the flash to be quicker than most - certainly not bothersome.

Most photographer’s sites bug me … actually, most suck. This one, however is way better than most.
