The photographer as part of the brand
Written on November 27, 2007
I feel like I’ve been seeing this more recently…advertising where the photographer is given a big credit on the ad. Terry Richardson shot the new Belvedere Vodka campaign featuring Vincent Gallo (though I don’t think that’s him below) and all the print ads have his signature scrawled across the ad.
Interesting to see that the photographer’s cachet is as inherent in the campaign as his aesthetic. You probably wouldn’t see Annie Liebovitz’s name scrawled across the bottom of her work for Disney or Louis Vuitton. But I do like the ads. Obviously Terry Richardson has a reputation as a partygoer (amongst other things..) and it seems fitting that he’d shoot for Belvedere Vodka.
More on the campaign here at WWD, via Berlin Cameron United.

not only does he have his sig across the print ads, but he actually IN the tv spot. i saw it the other night and just as i was thinking ‘this looks like a richardson directed ad’….he popped up snapping stills with that terry grin on his face.
classic.
That TV spot is really cool. I saw it while visiting the family over Thanksgiving (don’t own a TV myself). If anyone has a link to it, please post. I couldn’t seem to find it as of a couple of days ago.
Couldn’t believe it when I saw it. I thought, “is he really a recognizable icon now?” He is to a few of us. I think in the end, for the tv spot, he’s just a cool looking dude.
Isn’t it David LaChapelle who actually charges extra for his name to be used with his work?
Wasn’t Richard Avedon in the Chanel commercial(s) he directed?
