Word On The Street

Some recent links I found interesting…
Blogging is a low cost, high return marketing tool, sayeth the New York Times.
There is a part about how an ice cream company in Michigan called Denali’s started a blog dedicated to personal finance, and basically acts as its sole sponsor. It is in fact a tremendously successful blog that earns its money back several hundreds times over. Maybe a photo agency should start a blog dedicated to healthcare or something…
Social networking and photography (PDN..subscription required..)
Nothing overly revelatory, just a nice point of reference for the photo world. But a friend did pose an interesting question recently…if you don’t have a profile on one of the many networking sites are you losing out on anything? My quick answer is not really, especially if your name is Annie Liebovitz, but I do think it’s useful to be on one…

Those social networking sites can be useful, but photographers need to be careful with the terms and conditions. Facebook, for instance, has a ballsy rights grab in their terms: “By posting User Content to any part of the Site, you automatically grant, and you represent and warrant that you have the right to grant, to the Company an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to use, copy, publicly perform, publicly display, reformat, translate, excerpt (in whole or in part) and distribute such User Content for any purpose, commercial, advertising, or otherwise, on or in connection with the Site or the promotion thereof, to prepare derivative works of, or incorporate into other works, such User Content, and to grant and authorize sublicenses of the foregoing.”
