The Sartorialist

The Sartorialist (full disclosure…a definite guilty pleasure of mine) has been popping up even more of late in the blogosphere, with his recent exhibition opening at Danziger Projects.
James Danziger writes about it on his own blog, with some pre and post opening coverage..
A Photo Editor chimes in on one of James’ points..
Style.com, who sponsored the opening, had a chat with Sart..
and lastly, the New York Times had some things to say.
There seem to be some definite opinions, especially over on APE’s blog, as to whether or not his work is art. We live in a period where the art bubble seems to be ever expanding, as do people’s definitions of art.
My own humble opinion? Let’s appreciate the fact that this man started a blog purely out of passion, that has hardly a bad thing to say about anyone, and turned it into this cross-cultural, genre bending platform for discussing fashion on all levels, on a global scale. Is he the next Cartier-Bresson? Probably not. But he has captured moments, viewpoints and cultural references and the audience he has built for his photography and opinions can’t be ignored.

His work is fine, just like Anne Geddes’ baby work. It will offend no one. So why not sell Sart’s stuff off the walls of The Gap, and not in an art gallery…? Plenty of empty white sheetrock in any number of retail clothing stores in Manhattan, and God knows they’d love the foot traffic.
